Captain Mallin had quietly gone to contact VDF HQ back in Varium city. "I apologize for my earlier outburst, it was foolish." he said nervously. "I am here to negotiate Varium's surrender, but I do not have full authority to ensure its terms are carried out and neither does my president. You will have to take Third Earth by force if you wish to control Varium and occupy it. Varium refuses to become a puppet for the alliance too, and my government can't and won't change that. Military training is mandatory in our society as a result of our planet's natural dangers, and firearm ownership is high, not to mention the regional arsenals. After the amount of people I saw die out there, I want it to stop too, so please leave out the occupation. We will cease trade with the Graal for the sake of peace and we will limit our military to its prewar size so you can trust us, and we will elect a new governmentun-influenced by either side." His voice hardened. "But we will not submit to an occupation without a fight. And it would be a bloody fight for both sides."

"I fail to see how self-determination and democracy equate slavery," General Andrasa Vilodor countered to the Mognosh. "By definition, they are antithetical." She snorted, "Unless, of course, by 'the Graal,' you mean the Graal elite that presently crushes the masses under its boots."
Vilodor turned to the Varian human. "Regarding the Varium, we have no imperialistic intentions for you either. If you hold to your promises to cut ties with the Hegemony, limit military size to prewar levels, and hold new elections, there should be no reason for occupation. However, to ensure that these promises are kept, for the sake of our own safety, the Allies must have military observers on Third Earth. Can you agree to this necessary precaution?"

" You have won here on Primerus, Ayar of the Union, but you would not find victory so easily attained on Graal He'a! To vote is not the Graal way, and to press it upon them is to disaster. The strongest lead, and it is why the Gnatar leads.
I am not the Gnatar, nor will I pretend to be -- but I have been ordered by the Gnatar to stand by our beliefs, regardless of how many guns you bring to bear. Should the Esharans deem it worth their time to assault Gruul He'a with their superweapon, than you will truly understand the demonic forces we intended to rid the galaxy of. "

Mallin sighed with relief. "We accept, General" he said.

The Ayar general nodded to the Varian, then shook her head in disbelief at the Graal. "You take me for an idiot, certainly. Sitting in safety behind hundreds of thousands of conscripted soldiers, extorting wealth from the sweat, blood, and starved bodies of others...That is not strength. That is the cowardice of Autocracy and Social Darwinism, maintaining the status quo by stacking the odds against everyone else.
"Strength is opening oneself to the vulnerability of actual competition. Democracy. Strength is being able to support oneself by one's own efforts, or by cooperation with others, and not by coercing those stronger than oneself into doing the dirty work at the end of a gun-barrel. Social Cooperation. Strength is living one's life with the same rights as others, and not relying on the force of law to systematically win privileges and advantages others do not have. Equality.
"The Graal Hegemony is anything but strength, because it is anything but self-determining. If you insist on keeping Sorguth Prime, establish democratic constitutional checks. If you insist on maintaining a coward's dictatorship, then at least allow Sorguth Prime not to suffer it."

'' We are getting ahead of ourselves. '' A sharp aristocratic voice said, and it did not belong to the Tribune whom tapped an object on his wrist. A holo projection of Senator Drussus aboard the Imperator appeared, reclining in an Admiral's chair that looked more like a throne. '' Getting lost in rhetoric is what lead to the loss of millions of lives in the first place. Surely a compromise can be found for the valiant forces of the GRF and respecting the Gnatar's status and sovereignty amongst his people. '' He said clearing his throat.
'' Eshara would propose a special district on Sorguth Prime, protected by the occupation forces that is given special autonomy within the Hegemony. The GRF are a minority within the population and the district, centered around the city of Skraag would reflect this. In addition, any GRF fighters and their families would be free to seek refuge in the RWU without molestation or harassment from the authorities of the planet if they choose to leave. Eshara wishes for peace. '' He said, skewering the Mognosh with a scalding stare. '' but not so much that we abandon all of our principles. Make a deal, preserve what is left of your Hegemony, or see it wither to dust. The RWU must also be willing to recognize that such abrupt changes to a nation's culture and way of life cannot happen in the course of a single day. These thing's take time, and with the Allies on Sorguth Prime, it will be in an excellent position to extend it's ideals and change thing's for the better. Annhilating the Graal over ..trivial factors at this point...would not serve the Revolution or this great alliance. ''

" The Graal Hegemony will agree to this proposition. "

Genera Vilodor seethed silently for a long moment. She had seen death like never before. Bodies horrifically twisted and eviscerated over seas of blood and tears, under skies of fire and smoke. Worse was what she had not seen: A scale of destruction so great that practically one of every two RWU citizen-members who had landed on this hellhole would not return. To see herself and her comrades still alive come so far, through so much, to win so little for the Workers of the GRF was infuriating.
Finally, the general cooled down enough to speak. "The Esharan Senator speaks wisely," she stated flatly. "The RWU will agree to his terms, on the condition that the Graal Hegemony provide funds and materials for extensive reconstruction in Skraag."

'' The Republic will also aid in the reconstruction efforts of Skraag with funding, manpower, and materials. '' Drussus snapped, growing exasperated with the RWU's efforts to drag out negotiations over something as small as a band of rebels. '' We are finished here. '' It wasn't a question.
