As the Galifer made contact with Varium, its sister ship the Verifay found Ashigaru.
"This is Captain Heris of the Lintsyian Traveler-class vessel Verifay. I bring greetings on behalf of the Republic of Lintsyia. Would your people be interested in opening a dialogue between us?" He waited anxiously for a reply.

The Verifay was picked up on the Ashigaru planetary sensors. The reply came in shortly. " This is Ashigaru Planetary Defense. Please send language documents and planetary origins immediately. You will be permitted to land at Landing Zone 477.41, coordinates transponded to your navcomputer immediately."
The planet of Saskia was an arctic shard, with huge mountain ridges and small deposits of oceanic terrain, the average temperature on the surface was -50 degrees except in far winter when it dropped even further. The coordinates would take the Verifay to an unmarked location, where a huge hole had artificially been created. Upon lowering itself down into the hole, the Verifay would find Landing Zone 477.44 where two dozen Ashigaru military police, several politicians and a crowd had gathered. In the background, several other landing zones were visible as well. |

"Acknowledged," Heris replied happily. The Verifay proceeded to the coordinates, and a few minutes later Heris and two precautionary guards were standing before it.
"Wow," one of the guards commented. "Pretty big welcoming party."
"Did you see all that snow?" the other guard marveled. "I've never seen so much of it in my life!"

As the Verifay settled onto the landing pad, Minister of Diplomacy Kjuran Sadoo stepped forward with a small entourage of guards to meet the foreign visitors. This would be the first visit from intergalactic life. Ever.
The Ashigaru were lanky, about two meters tall with two pointed antennae across their rigid, triangular countenance. Four appendage hung from their small, segmented body and two long legs held them high. In their own language, they gave incessant clicks and whirs like the insectoids that they were, but when the translation device was briefly equipped around the diplomat's neck, it would be translated into galactic basic.
" I am Minister of Diplomacy Kjuran Sadoo, and on behalf of Prime Minister Sushki Vodann and the Former Emperor of the Traverse, I welcome you to the Empire of the Ashigaru, established in 1408, Galactic Age and maintained even now. We have not seen your kind in our travels, so .. as you can see, " He raised one of his four arms to indicate the assembled military police, rifles at the ready. " we are somewhat nervous about new visitors. From which planet do you hail? " |

"A planet far to the galactic northwest called Lintsyia," Heris replied. "It is the homeworld of the Republic of Lintsyia, established in the galactic year 124." He smiled.

" I see. " The Lintsyian entourage was led through the crowd, military police keeping the amazed Ashigaru locals back, and into a rather exquisite looking elevator of obsidian and polished steel. They had started on SL02 and would drop to SL017 before disembarking. Here, in something that resembled military headquarters, the Lintsyians were admitted to a rather large room with intricate paintings of Ashigaru in a time before galactic travel. Some pictures they were seated, two hands on their lap and two clasped in prayer, in another they were in ornate, ceremonial armor wielding curved blades.
At the end of the huge table was an Ashigaru, obviously much older as indicated by his thinner face, the dull hue of his chitinous exoskeleton. He approached the Lintsyian diplomat and held two hands out in introduction. " Hello. I am Prime Minister Sushki Vodann of the Ashigaru Empire. It is a exquisite pleasure to finally meet other lifeforms in the galaxy. I hope your trip was pleasant. " |

"Greatings, Prime Minister Sushki," Heris said. "It is a pleasure to meet you, as well. Our trip was pleasant, thank you." He observed the paintings on the walls. "These paintings are extraordinary. It is nice to finally meet another race that appreciates the arts."

" The Ashigaru appreciate all forms of art. Perhaps we could have arranged the allowance of one of our lesser historical paintings to return home with you as a sign of good will. Now, " the Prime Minister pulled the chair back and took a seat, indicating with one of his arms for the Lintsyians to do the same. " What brings you to the Traverse? " The Traverse of course was the Elesian Traverse, the mostly ice world based system in which the Ashigaru inhabited. |

"That would be marvelous," Heris said in reply to the painting. "Exploring, mostly. The Verifay was built for to explore space, and it's relatively new- this is her first mission. But other than exploration, we had hoped to find new people- new cultures, not unlike yourselves. We would like to set up a trade agreement, even though Lintsyia and our colony world Galifay are so far north."

" Ah, indeed! Genvar, is Mr. Tashka around? " The Prime Minister called across the room, and the Ashigaru ADF officer leaned his head through the door and supplanted a firm nod. " Bring him in! "
" Mr. Tashka is the CEO of the Sroshka Financial Firm that deals exclusively with trade. They handle all our native dealings and they will be opening their Xeno Branch as well to accommodate your own people. " An Ashigaru in a tight fitting black one suit (a single piece of clothing that covered the Ashigaru's body from the neck of their segmented body to the top of their legs) entered and quietly sat down with a firm nod toward the Prime Minister.
" Hello, I am Mr. Tashka of the Sroshka Financial Firm. If you would like, we can begin negotiations for trade between the Empire and the Republic. As a standard freighter costs around 40,000,000,000 credits; we would sponsor half the cost. Our own freighter designs can haul ten billion more credits of liquidated goods that would help the Republic's own treasuries, as well as our own. The only stipulation would be that the Republic's sponsored freighters only use Sroshka assigned trade routes; of which one would be the Lintsyian Traverse Trade Route, between your own worlds and the Elesian Traverse. " Mr. Tashka's antennae bent as Heris mulled over the question. |

"It would be quite acceptable to have an assigned trade route," Heris said. "And it would also be acceptable to cover the other half of the cost of a freighter. Is this our agreement, then?" He smiled to show that he wanted to be as cooperative as possible.

" Indeed! However, our own orbital facilities are not yet completed and thus we cannot construct these vessels yet. Does the Republic possess such capacities yet? And also, I have questions regarding your culture -- would it be possible for an exploration team to return to Lintsyia with you to learn about our new friends? " |

Heris thought. "I am sure that we would be able to construct freighters that met your specifications on Lintsyia," he replied. "However, I am unsure if sending a team back with us would be a good idea. We have suffered a severe famine recently, and it has caused an incredible amount of unrest." He paused. "While we have received reports that the famine is drawing to a close, the terrorist group that formed because of it is likely to stick around for a while. They have already taken the life of a diplomat- have you had contact with the Revolutionary Workers' Union?"
