'' Did I imply that I was not in any way? Those are our terms. Military access through Varian space, a trade agreement, and when the time comes permission to base troops near Third Earth for our attack. ''

The next few weeks would be chaotic, after the agreement political chaos had reigned on Pretoria and across the Esharan Republic. When the dust settled, a new Emperor had been declared by the Army, the democratic insitutitions that had governed for centuries abandoned, and a new regime in place. A message from Secundus had once more been sent to the Varium, requesting official recognition of the Dominion as the rightful government of Eshara.

The reply was: "Varium officially recognizes the Dominion of Eshara, and the Emperor as its rightful ruler."

After the senate saw the records of the Esharan coup and voted on which government to support, a second message was sent to the Esharans.
"To the Emperor: When we made this alliance we made it with the Republic of Eshara, a government voted for by the people for the people to serve the people. We reaffirmed it before we had a chance to examine your government. Now we have, and here's our statement. The Esharan government is a illegitimate dictatorship that uses what we classify as natural rights violations to enforce its power. Varium will not support such a government and if a war comes, will fight to bring it down. Good day to you Emperor, we'll be dropping off your embassy staff on the edge of your space shortly."
The Varian government had deliberately waited until its forces were ready before sending the reply. The Esharan embassy had been quietly surrounded by agents with sky wings (glide-capable exosuits) and electronic stun guns on every roof, prepared to move. The engineering corp had routed power away from surrounding neighborhoods into the embassy. Night fell and Varium City's lights came on. Someone in the city power management facility threw a switch. The lights of the buildings around the Esharan embassy went out. The lights of the embassy flared blinding white for a moment then died as the power surge overloaded its systems in a makeshift EMP pulse.
A volley of gas grenades silently arced from hidden launchers over the compound's wall and fired. Fifty Agents dropped from the roofs. Equipped with night vision goggles, forty eight of them landed in the compound and quickly subdued the few guards the sleeping gas hadn't already rendered unconscious. Their leader signaled all clear, and phase 2 of the attack began.
Two aircraft descended from above, each with ten agents. These were rotor powered craft so their position wouldn't be given away by rocket flares. One craft landed where the ambassador's office would be, another landed in the rear. The agents inside used rotary saws to slice open the roof and gas tubes to fill the embassy with knockout gas. Then they threw stun grenades and concussion grenades inside and descended. Within minutes most of the embassy was secure and the prisoners and wounded agents were being hauled away.

Ironically the use of knock out 'gas' had the effect of killing a several of the Esharan staff and injuring dozens more (see below). Gunfire barked as Esharan guards made a feeble attempt at making a stand when they rushed the ambassador to a safe house, but they were quickly subdued as the huge amount of 'gas' pumped in overwhelmed even the tough Esharan's resistance to most forms of chemical warfare due to prolonged exposure without protection. The Esharan ambassador hadn't been asked to leave, he hadn't been given anytime to collect him or his staff, Instead, the Varium had invaded sovereign Esharan territory and killed its embassy staff (unlike the Ayar who had been ordered to leave, but refused and continued to occupy Esharan soil). The Empire now had more than a valid excuse to declare war on the Varium, the news networks were full of it the next morning. '' VARIAN'S MASSACARE ESHARAN EMBASSY! EMPEROR VESPASIAN VOWS RESPONSE! '' [ Note: For future reference, 'knockout gas' when used on a person has to be administered by anesthesiologist because each person has different tolerances that can lead to death if not done properly. See the Moscow Theater Hostage Crisis when the FSB and Spetsnaz flooded the theater with a similar type of gas, they ended up killing 129 of the hostages they we're supposed to knock unconscious. ]

The response was released an hour later, accompanied by a video of the Esharan ambassador and staff being carried out on stretchers, still very evidently alive. "The ambassador and his staff are being treated at Varium city chief medical hospital for injuries from the use of knockout gas to subdue them. They will be returned to Esharan space as soon as they can be moved."

A statement from the Imperial Foreign Ministry followed the next day after the attack, broadcast throughout the galaxy. The statement was read by Eshara's Foreign Minister of Affairs, Senator Drussus. '' The Dominion is outraged at the treating of Eshara's diplomatic representatives, which included the deaths of at least six and the injuring of numerous others. Diplomatic representatives that the Varian's had recognized as the legitimate government of the Esharan people. There can be no excuse for this breach of diplomatic protocol, the Esharan ambassador was given no eviction notice, and no reasoning as to why the Esharan embassy was suddenly and viciously assaulted without warning. '' Drussus paused, his gaze flickering over the holo cam's.
'' The Empire through diplomatic channels will punish the Varian's through trade and other sanctions until restitution is paid, an apology given, and the Varian's respect the Treaty of Primerus which allows Esharan military personnel to observe the Varian government for five years. Eshara has no plans of withdrawing it's military liasons and will abide by the treaty, as should the Varian's if they wish to remain a member of the international community. ''

"The treaty of Primerus was signed with the Republic of Eshara. Since the dominion is no longer recognized, we will not let the supporters of this false emperor and his false government stay on Varium. You can take your advisors back too, they'll be on the same ship as the embassy staff, alive, in best shape we can manage, and fed."
