Battle over Wasser Belligerents: United Council & Laws of the Centicrus vs Reich von die Wasser-Krieger Backstory:The Centicrus split their fleets into two forces, while one launched a surprise attack over the Hai fleet at Dunkelheist the second Hai fleet over the planet of Wasser was given advanced warning from its brethren. Although still attempting to get into battle formation, the Hai fleet has managed to bring about a semblance of order to its ranks when the UCLC ships arrived in orbit. Points of Interest: Advanced Warning: Hai forces have been warned about the attacks and were making preparations prior to the arrival of the second UCLC Force. They will be at full combat effectiveness after one turn. Warlike: The Hai are bred and trained for war practically since birth, as a result they have greater combat effectiveness. Esharan Steel (Trade Good) : Hai ships are more robust and difficult to destroy Forces:Reich: 1 Dreadnought 4 Frigates UCLC:4 Advanced Frigates 1 Destroyer Posting Order:-UCLC -Reich -Modmark *This is a Major Battle, there will be 5 modmarks.

The Centicrus fleet didn't even slow down. Splitting into two groups, it swung around the patrolling fleet with two ships on one side, three on the other, unleashing a concentrated bombardment on the outermost frigate as it kept going. The destroyer withheld its fire, using its weapons as point-defense for its group.
The maneuver was obvious though, the UCLC fleet was aiming not for the patrol itself, but the vulnerable planet beyond.

Heerfuhrer Orium sat on his new flagship RWK Stolz, the Reich's new dreadnought, as it burned through the emptiness of space for the UCLC battle group that had the audacity to attack the Hai homeworld. Red strobes were lighting the bridge as kampher got into their positions. Orium was determined to make the UCLC pay for their foolishness. Word had come in that the 2nd Raum had already been engaged, though he could do nothing for them until this assault was taken care of.
"Have all ships stay in formation until engagement distance is achieved. Once that is the case have the RWK Lefang and RWK Captor break off and combine their firepower on a frigate. The RWK Dufang and RWK Stern are to do the same on another frigate. If any of them are able to board and take over those frigates. We will take the rest until they can move on to new targets."
The RWK Stolz was capable of generating a literal wall of fire for the dreadnought bristled with cannons of various size from ones capable of taking down capital ships to the point-defense against smaller vessels such as fighters. Orium hadn't expected to have the pride of the Reich christened in this way, but she would taste the blood of their enemies none the less.

The first ship to die was not a Reich ship but instead belonged to the Centicrus. The UCLC frigate Mantis was engulfed in flames when it came too close into the range of the Dreadnought Stolz and her two escort frigates. Cruising through the debris, the Dreadnought fired another salvo that narrowly missed killing the Mantis sister ship. The fire fight that developed between the two navies was fast and furious as they closed the distance. The Hai with their superior plasma weapons (and a Dreadnought) but the UCLC which had the bigger and better armored ships. Despite the ferocity of the Hai resistance, two of the UCLC frigates managed to punch through the still fumbling defensive line towards the planet.
Like fish scrambling out of the way of a giant shark, merchant ships and freighters zig zagged to get out the way of the battle over the space port. But in the middle of a war zone, that was difficult. One wounded Esharan shipping freighter drifted into a Hai Xenophite Tanker, the resulting explosion left twelve other vessels in the immediate vicinity crippled or damaged (killing an estimated three thousand civilians in one incident alone). Meanwhile, the UCLC frigates continued towards the planet.
CASUALTIES: Reich: 1 Frigate (RWK Dufang / 40% effectiveness, listing heavily to port)
UCLC: 1 Advanced Frigate (DESTROYED)

The Centicrus ships jinked, shifting their courses to avoid enemy fire as they sped towards the planet at a pace unmanageable by the slower Hai vessels. With every fraction of a second they put more distance between themselves and the dreadnoughts fire, while their weapons scathed across any vessels that happened to pass them by, especially when the debris might somehow hinder their pursuers.
But that was not their primary target. The UCLC frigates converged towards Wasser's orbital construction facilities, the heart of Reich shipbuilding, with intent to focus all their fire upon it.
((I believe I noted it, but the UCLC ships were actually maneuvering around the Hai patrol, not straight through it.))

Being closer to Wasser's gravitational field and since their intercept course had failed, the 1st Raum Herr used the gravity to increase their speed. It was a maneuver that the kampher practiced often and knew when to pull out of the gravity forces to be in the appropriate attack position. The dreadnought kept up the barrage of fire while the UCLC were in range as the three fully operation Reich frigates pursued doing the same. The goal of the 1st Raum was still to either destroy all of the UCLC battle group or if the frigates could, latch on and board the UCLC frigates.
Orium knew that the frigates were the true threat and the single destroyer would be no match for the dreadnought or any remaining frigates that the Reich had left. There was a lot of civilian traffic in front of the UCLC battle group and the Heerfuhrer wept inwardly at the casualties that would in sue. There hadn't been enough time to clear the space, but he was determined to protect his own people as well as the Esharan merchants as best he could.
The RWK Dufang was falling behind from the damage the vessel had sustained. Her hauptmann though was determined not to be left out of this fight and was pursuing at its best possible speed. Even though all kampher were prepared to die, the crew of the RWK Dufang knew that their life would be wasted if they blew up their vessel without doing damage to the bugs.
*Note: Most of the Reich Frigates' fire is directed for engines and weapons control so they can try and board.

The two UCLC frigates hummed towards the extensive (and sprawling) Reich shipbuilding facilities, the frigates proceeding to hammer anything that looked as if it could even support a ship. Supports groaned, fires raged, and drydocks with ships that were half complete were reduced to heaps of slag and twisted metal. But for all their fury, the ships did not have the firepower to completely destroy the facility. But they did do a rather glorious job of making a mess that would take at least a year and millions of credits to repair.
However, the frigates had to slow to take their shots. Otherwise the speed of their engines would have sling shot them over the very targets they were trying to destroy (not to mention the lanes were filled with numerous merchant vessels that had been docking or leaving, and unless the frigates wanted to crash into them they had to adjust their courses accordingly..even while blasting anything that moved). While the frigates had been busy hammering the starport, the Dreadnought was moving forward. The Dreadnought lacked the speed but it made up for it with the range that her forward guns carried. A roaring plasma shot exploded next to the UCLC frigate Venom, it was only a matter of time before they re calibrated their aim.
Meanwhile, the lone frigate and her destroyer escort were attempting to keep the remaining Hai fleet busy. The attention came at a price as two frigates tore of to focus their fire on the vessels. The Hai frigates were slower but more heavily armed (and backed by the strong Esharan steel which they were manufactured from), whereas the Centicrus ships were faster and had the thicker armor that came with being an advanced frigate. The result was a slugging match but the Hai ships weren't just shooting plasma. It became apparent as they steadily closed the distance that they were shooting boarding shuttles. Like parasites hooking onto a host, the shuttles attached themselves all across the hull of the frigate Black Widow. The shuttles disgorged teams of Hai marines who began to move through the lower decks of the ship up towards the bridge, amid furious resistance from the ships defenders. With their work done and the Reich fleet closing, the common consensus amongst the UCLC Captain's was a withdrawal before they were enveloped.
CASUALTIES: Reich: Starport (55% damaged, 10 credits to rebuild)
UCLC: 1 Advanced Frigate / Black Widow, boarded by Hai marines and in danger of being captured.

The UCLC fleet accelerated again, speeding up and using the mass of Wasser to slingshot around it and pick up speed while simultaneously gaining cover form the upper atmosphere. With the frigates so close to the planet, the Reich would risk hitting their own planet if they fired at the UCLC ships.
But the Centicrus were not about to let the Reich do their job for them. As they slung around the planet they continued a full-on bombardment, blasting anything that looked like a primary military or industrial center. They were not the most accurate, nor the most devastating shots, but with targets the size of cities it wasn't too hard to miss.
Meanwhile, the Black Widow struggled to escape its predicament. All firepower from both the frigate and its escort had been diverted to shooting down boarding pods, and the captain had made a desperate decision. As both ships accelerated around the planet, the compromised areas of the ship were locked down and spaced. The Hai who survived would have to cut their way through bulkheads and choke-points while the defenders consolidated their defenses. If that precaution didn't work, the captain stood by the issue evacuation and self-destruct orders.

The RWK Captor had held on to the UCLC frigate as long as was necessary. With the all clear from the marines, the Reich frigate detached its boarding tubes and dropped away from the enemy vessel. The frigate was then labeled as a FMOB to let the other Reich vessels know that marines had boarded and not to destroy the ship unless necessary. Instead the Captor joined in with the other warships of the 1st Raum in targeting the UCLC battle group.
All the warships tried to stay within range of the enemy ships and firing on a more level angle of attack as to have their weapons pass through the outer layers of the atmosphere than into the vast oceans below. The dreadnought was the slowest of coarse from its size, but the various guns fired once good targeting solutions had been locked in. Heerfurher Orium had sent orders to the merchant vessels to either stay close to the star port or seek refugee either planet side or to leave the system. The traffic authority onboard the station was doing its best to get the civilians to safety though they were having a hard time of it with the damage the station had received.
On board the UCLC frigate the kampher marines locked down their sections. With the gaping hole in the hull behind them from the boarding tubes, their mag boots were engaged. Even though the Hai were capable of fighting in almost any biome and atmosphere this was a space battle and they knew their jobs. The kampher space combat suits provided them with armor and protection from combat in zero-g and atmospheric loss. They also gave the marines a demonic lock from the re-breathers over their faces and the glowing red eyes that the masks gave them. Squads broke off on their assigned tasks. Taking different routes the squads would make for the bridge and engineering to take command of the ship and to shut down power to the weapon systems and engines until the vessel was fully under Reich control. With plasma rifles and plasma stun charges, the marines burned or destroyed anything that stood in their way.

The UCLC faced several problems in its bombardment of the planet. The first being that Wasser was composed almost completely of water, the water acting as a stubborn shield for the cities that existed beneath the waves. The actual surface targets generally used for trade with the outside world were small, like trying to blast a needle in a haystack. Nor did the frigates have the punch of a Reich battleship or dreadnought to penetrate beneath the waves of the planet effectively to penetrate to the cities.
However, that didn't mean the planet escaped unscathed. The great trading port was struck over and over, missed shots striking into the sea generated tsunami's that rocked the massive trading port and washed over little Xenophite rigs that straddled the ocean waters. But in the end, having only a small firing window and such small guns for a job doomed the UCLC's plan to completely lay waste to the surface of Wasser a failure. .
For the Black Widow however, the spider found itself cast into a net it could not escape. While the point defense weapons were effective at taking down numerous Hai boarding craft, it could not stop all of them. The attempt to flush the Hai out into space was foiled by the fact that the marines were wearing pressurized suits and mag lock boots. Slowly but surely they cut their way through the ship, fighting tenaciously the entire way. By now the engine room had fallen and troops were making their way to the upper decks to the gun batteries and eventually the Captain's bridge.
CASUALTIES: Reich: 1 Commercial Port (40% damaged, 6 credits to repair) 1 Xenophobe Extractor (25% damaged, producing 2 Xenophite a turn, 4 credits to repair)
UCLC: Black Widow (60% under control of Hai marines)

Warning klaxons screamed as crew members abandoned their positions heading for the evacuation shuttles, meanwhile the Black Widow's Captain had ordered the scuttling of the ship. The core went into a meltdown, Hai engineers however were able to avert complete destruction as the ships engine only partially melted. The result was an explosion that wrecked several decks (including the bridge) killing numerous crew and marines, the ship was now little more than a floating wreck. Meanwhile, a late explosion aboard the RWK Dufang forced the crew to evacuate the bloodied ship. The damage sustained just too difficult to combat as the battle raged. Meanwhile, the Centicrus fleet had signaled a retreat from the destruction it had wreaked on Wasser. The planetary facilities left burning and in tatters, thousands dead. Reich industry was in rubble, it would take time to rebuild but the UCLC had hardly escaped unscathed.
Result: UCLC Victory
CASUALTIES: UCLC: 1 Frigate (DESTROYED) 1 Frigate (CAPTURED)
Reich: 1 Frigate (DESTROYED) Starport (55% damaged, 10 credits to rebuild) 1 Commercial Port (40% damaged, 6 credits to repair) 1 Xenophobe Extractor (25% damaged, producing 2 Xenophite a turn, 4 credits to repair)
